There’s nothing better than jumping into your bed with fresh, clean sheets. But when was the last time you cleaned your mattress? Freshening up your mattress regularly is important to remove odours and other unwanted guests. We spend about
1/3 of our life lying on our beds so you’d think that cleaning your mattress would be on top of your cleaning list. Just one or two cringing facts about your mattress to give you a little motivation to maintain it. Did you know that the average contains between 10,000- 10,000,000 dust mites, bed bugs and dead skin cells. Just thinking about it makes my skin crawl. Anyway let’s get to it! The great thing about the method I’m about to share with you is that its free and you most likely have these ingredients in your kitchen already!
What you’ll need:
Baking Soda
Lavender Essential Oil (or your favourite essential oil)
Sieve/Mesh strainer
Put 1 cup of baking soda in a jar and add 4-5 drops of the essential oil of your choice I personally love lavender because its great for relaxation and helps me sleep. Close the jar and give it a good shake or stir it thoroughly with a fork. Using the sieve sprinkle the mixture directly onto your mattress and let it sit for an hour or more. After that grab your vacuum cleaner and thoroughly vacuum your mattress and you’re done. It’s that simple! The baking soda will neutralise odours and draw out moisture and dirt and the essential oil will leave a lovely fragrance in your mattress.
I would recommend doing this once every 6-8 weeks.
Anther helpful tip is to use a mattress cover to help protect against dust mites and other allergens. To lengthen the life and support of your mattress, flip over every 6 months.
